The Special Crimes Unit
The SCU is a special task force designed to deal with out of the ordinary crimes. Founded at the behest of Mayor Roderick “Iron Rod” Pendelton, the SCU draws its personnel from almost every department in the SAPDand has an unusual degree of flexibility in terms of its jurisdiction, the better to deal with the high profile cases and violent criminals that are its remit. Its officers are the brightest and the best, driven law enforcers whose integrity and dedication to the job are unparalleled.
That’s the public perception, at least. In truth, the squad was founded by the Mayor in order to boost his numbers before a close election, and damned if it didn’t work, drawing in the conservative vote the Democratic incumbent needed to stay in office. Unfortunately, with San Angelisco’s coffers being almost empty, there was nothing in the budget to support the elite squad that the Mayor envisioned. Instead, the SCU, based out of the run-down Callahan Street Station in Riggs, has become a dumping ground for the force’s misfits and mavericks.
For all that, the unit is remarkably effective at combating crime, albeit not in the media-friendly and photogenic manner that both the Mayor and Captain Jefferson D’Sebel, the SCU’s commander, would prefer.
